What is your Aspiration?

It is critical that you form a picture of your career aspiration early on in your career. It will act as a beacon for a sailor, so with every step in your career you can determine if you are ‘on track’ of reaching your goal.

Ideally, your career aspiration combines your current skills and expertise as starting point, it fits with your interests and passion, so you can play to your strengths. It also needs to align with the typical career paths and experiences you need to build in your specific line of work. And it needs to be a route where your employers are willing to pay for and invest in. What sort of organizational culture is important to you? Where do you function best?

With long term career oversight or career optimization, a regular check-in (annually is good) will show if you are on track and any new opportunities you have. It will also highlight network events that broaden your horizon and keep you in sync with new developments in your field.

You will need to be clear on the trade offs that are required to get to your desired position and ensure that this works well with the overall values you have. Will you have to be mobile to move ahead? How does this impact your family and relationships?
